Neco Genius 1 Battery Charger
I have an electric golf cart and maintenance (along with space to do it) has been neglected. I'm trying the 'do it yourself' model and the experience has been an interesting project.
The project I have is a 36V Electric Golf Cart and trying to charge the cart itself. The charger requires the cart to have a little charge as the charger detects the current levels and start charging accordingly. When you plug it in, the batteries are dead so the charger doesn't register. Since there are 6 - 6volt batteries you can't pull your normal battery charger down and start charging (that would be too easy). What you can do is put 2 of the 6volt batteries in series to make it 12volts and then your normal car charger will work. Downside is these are smart chargers these days and requires a little voltage to detect the battery. I pulled the battery out of the lawn mower and attached it in parallel so the charger could detect and let it run for 5 minutes. Then I disconnected the lawn mower battery. The car charger is now charging faster than it should so I'm only letting this charge for 1.5 hours. This takes care of 2 batteries and there are 6 total. I repeat this sequence until they are all done. I should have a working golf cart charger now but I don't... I GIVE UP and almost took it in. Then I found a 6volt charger. Acutally the Neco Genius 1. This is the slowest charger they have and will charge and maintain 12v and 6v batteries. Perfect! This thing also take into account that the batteries could probably be dead and has a manual mode. Sure enough, I connect it 1 battery and doesn't auto connect. I put it in manual mode for 6v, it starts adding small voltage to the battery and in 5 minutes goes back to automatic mode. It recognized the 6volt battery and started charging as I wanted it to. I let this charge for 8 hours and do this 6 more times. Then I plug in the golf cart charger and BINGO! It works. A $30 investment and a lifetime of learning in the books.
Here is the Neco Genius 1 and strongly I recommend. If I was to buy another car battery charger, I would try the Neco Genius 10, that 10amp charging will make quick work of car batteries!
