Civilization
You should pick your starting civilization based on the commander and buffs it provides. It's generally recommended that you start with China to get Sun Tzu and a building speed buff.
You can find a more detailed guide in ROK Civilization Guide.
Troop Type
Technology and equipment make the difference in this game.
Because in the early game you will not be able to craft good equipment for all troop types, or level and expertise the all the commanders needed you will need to choose 1 troop type to focus on.
For F2P it's recommended you play infantry for the great, early and accessible commanders like Sun Tzu.
You should use speedups during training events only for your troop type, level up the corresponding commanders, focus on that troop type technology first and make a good gear set for a march of that troop type. Better to have 1 very good march on the field then 5 mediocre ones. In early kvk's most people can bring 1 or 2 troops to field. Not 5!
Commanders to focus
If you are jumping with us we expect you to think on the long run and stay with us until the end.
Therefore it is important you make an ultimate setup of 5 marches you would like to combine in the end game.
Make a plan for working towards those combinations without loosing gold heads along the way on commanders you won't be able to use later on.
Examples:
Richard is one of the best commanders in kvk 1. But looses value with extreme haste in next kvk's. YSG is a commander with a long term value. SOC commanders are always better but you will take some time to get there. Aethelflead is a free for all. So you will expertise her in time. If you are a high spender, you have a lot more options.
Equipment and Materials
The equipment for your preferred troop type will ask for a specific material more than others. Therefore know what you want to forge at the blacksmith so you can focus on producing the right materials for it!
City Hall progress
For the list that gives you all the requirements for each City Hall level go to City Upgrades
Spending and Investment Order
Gems! Make a plan on how, where and when to spend your gems. (VIP points, VIP shop, Wheel of Fortune,...)
If you F2P (don't spend money) you should pay extra attention to where you invest all your precious resources as they will be scarce. F2P guide is available in F2P Guide.
If you spend your hard-earned money, do it with a plan so you can maximize your growth. Spender Guide is available in Spender Guide.
How to gather more resources
To grow your account and be able to fight in kvk you will need tons and tons of resources!
Remember a lower ranked gathering commander is a lot cheaper to rank up towards lvl 37 and no need to get past lvl 37 for gathering commanders. Use the right commanders for the resource type.
Create at least 2-3 farm accounts if you want to be competitive during kvk.
We have a ROK Farming Guide.
